Lauren Cunningham
Professional Summary
Lauren earned her Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. She also holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour with a specialization in mental health from McMaster University. This educational experience provided her with a diverse understanding of the biological, psychological and social factors influencing mental health and neurological conditions.
Lauren works with individuals facing various physical, cognitive and mental health challenges who are hoping to increase their participation in meaningful daily activities. Her clients include veterans adjusting to post-service life, individuals recovering from motor vehicle accidents and individuals returning to work roles. Lauren has diverse experience working with individuals in hospitals, rehabilitation and community settings. Prior to joining Modern OT, Lauren worked with clients following neurological events, including brain injury and strokes, collaborating with them to meet their rehabilitation goals. Lauren also has experience working with adults with neurological conditions, including dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and cerebral palsy. Lauren has honed her skills in coaching and counselling for mental health while providing resources and strategies to improve her client’s quality of life. She utilizes an empathetic and creative approach to therapy sessions to ensure her clients feel heard and understood. Lauren has a particular interest in supporting clients with neurological disorders (i.e. Brain Injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Post-Stroke, ADHD) by developing cognitive strategies and implementing assistive devices that will improve their quality of life and increase engagement in personally meaningful activities.
Lauren is committed to continuous professional development and seeks opportunities to refine her skills and learn new approaches that will support her clients. Lauren has specialized training in principles of neuroplasticity, mental health first aid, working with clients experiencing concussion and brain injury, as well as approaches for developing gradual return to work plans. She consistently aims to help people achieve their goals by developing intervention plans that are personalized and client-centered.
In her free time, Lauren enjoys skiing, going for walks, spending time with friends and family and watching reality competition television shows.
